Private Thomas Service

Thomas Service was born on 4 December 1900 in Castle Street, Ballymena, the first of seven children of house painter George Service and his wife Catherine (née McCartney). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in John Street, Ballymena, with his parents and four of his siblings. The family later moved to Clarence Street.

Service enlisted in the North Irish Horse in September 1918 (regimental number unknown). He probably trained at the regiment's reserve camp at Antrim before being demobilised at some point following the end of the war on 11 November 1918.

Following his discharge Service returned to Ballymena, where he married Sarah Waide on 15 June 1927.

Thomas's father George also served in the war, as a sapper in the 122nd Field Company, Royal Engineers.
